The Caribbean Association of Home Economists Inc., founded in 1972 is a non-governmental organisation of over five hundred (500) members from the Anglophone Caribbean, Guyana, Belize and to a lesser extent North America. CAHE is affiliated to the International Federation for Home Economics that is over one hundred years old.

Why we do it
Our Members matter

 The association works in close alliance with the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) formerly the American Home Economics Association (AHEA), and is twinned with the Toronto Home Economics Association (THEA). CAHE has also worked closely with Ministries of  Edu-  cation, Health and Agriculture around the region as well as with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA). As professionals and educators alike we share a common vision for the improvement of the quality of life for Caribbean citizens and for the development of Home Economics in the region. CAHE offers a system professional certification for its members.

Our aims:

– To improve the well being of individuals and families in the Caribbean region.

– To promote awareness of social, economic and political issues and to participate and in activities which impact families.

– To promote high professional standards among Home Economists in the region through continuing education and professional development programmes.

– To incorporate Home Economics in the school curricula at all levels of the educational system.

– To improve and strengthen education in Home Economics at all levels of the Education system.

– To encourage research in Home Economics and related fields and to assist in the dissemination and application of the findings

– To strengthen the profession by means of communication and linkages with organisations and institutions of like disciplines and /or similar interests both regionally and internationally.

achievements & contributions

Our achievements and contributions to the region are numerous. Of major consequence is:

1. The Production of text books:

– Caribbean Home Economics in Action Books 1, 2, 3. This is used in schools around the region.

– An adventure to Caribbean cuisine.

2. The provision of consultation and examiners to the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) subjects in Home Economics at the CSEC and CAPE proficiencies.

3. Consultation and staffing to degree granting institutions

– The University of Guyana, University of the West Indies , University of Technology – Jamaica, Barbados Community College

4. Gender Equity in Home Economics

– Scholarships, Book Grants and awards to students of Home Economics.

5. Training workshops around the region.

6. Integration with other subjects.

7. CAHE quarterly magazine/newsletter.

8. The Caribbean Journal of Home Economics (CJHE)

9. Research Projects

10. Special Projects: – Student Health Intervention Programme (SHIP)

11. Family Natural Disaster Awareness Programme (FANDAP)
